Household Chemicals and Your Son's Masculinity

Can These Household Chemicals Crush Your Son’s Masculinity?
by: Dr. Mercola
(Mercola.com | December 19 2009 | 136,463 views)

Hello, Everyone. Today's post features health information from Dr. Mercola about the negative impact household chemicals can have on baby boys. This is one of many enlightening articles I'll share from other bloggers, in the months ahead. Take heed and take care! The post/article "Can These Household Chemicals Crush Your Son’s Masculinity?" follows, below:

"Elevated levels of two plastic-softening chemicals in pregnant women's urine are linked to less-masculine play behavior by their sons several years later, according to a study published in the International Journal of Andrology. Phthalates, which are used in everything from vinyl floors to plastic tubing and soaps and lotions, are pervasive in the environment and have increasingly become associated with changes in development of the male brain as well as with genital defects, metabolic abnormalities and reduced testosterone in babies and adults.

A team of U.S. and British researchers posed a standard play questionnaire to the parents of 145 preschool-age children. Then they ranked the types of play on a scale from most masculine (such as play fighting or using trucks) to most feminine.

An effect was identified among the sons of women with higher concentrations of di(2-ethylhexyl) phthalate (DEHP) and dibutyl phthalate (DBP) in their prenatal urine. On average, those boys scored 8 percent further away from the masculine end of the scale than other boys.

Patchouli Essential Oil-infused Butters

Hello, Everyone! It's good to be back with you all, again. Thank-you for stopping by to 'visit' with me via this blog from time to time. I hope August was another amazing month of really good accomplishments and positive activity, for you!

Today, I'm featuring patchouli essential oil and patchouli combined with essential butters and other essential oils. Many of you may have already discovered that essential butters labeled as 'body butter' can be used as hair moisturizers/conditioners. Patchouli essential oil has a glorious aroma and is a great fragrance for a hair product. It has been stated that patchouli essential oil stimulates the growth of healthy hair. Below, are a few more details about patchouli essential oil, with featured patchouli essential oil suppliers and patchouli-infused essential butters you may like.

"Patchouli (Pogostemon cablin (Blanco) Benth; also patchouly or pachouli) is a species from the genus Pogostemon and a bushy herb of the mint family, with erect stems, reaching two or three feet (about 0.75 metre) in height and bearing small pale pink-white flowers. The plant is native to tropical regions of Asia and is now extensively cultivated in Caribbean countries, China, India, Thailand, Indonesia, Malaysia, Mauritius, Philippines, West Africa and Vietnam.

The scent of patchouli is heavy and strong. It has been used for centuries in perfumes and continues to be so today. The word derives from the Tamil patchai (Tamil: பச்சை) (green), ellai (Tamil: இலை) (leaf). In Assamese it is known as xukloti.
Pogostemon cablin, P. commosum, P. hortensis, P. heyneasus and P. plectranthoides are all cultivated for their oils and all are known as 'patchouli' oil, but P. cablin is considered superior.

Extraction of the Essential Oil

Extraction of the essential oil is by steam distillation, requiring the cell walls of the leaves to be first ruptured. This can be achieved by steam scalding, light fermentation, or by drying.
Leaves are harvested several times a year, and where dried may be exported for distillation of the oil. Sources disagree over how to obtain the best quality oil. Some claim the highest quality oil is usually

Rose Essential Oil - Rose Otto versus Rose Absolute

Hello, Everyone! I hope July was a great month for you, and I hope August has been and is a month full of wonderful blessings for you! Today, I sharing information about rose oil.

I love roses! They are one of the most beautiful flowers in the world, and their fragrance is sublime. I definitely 'smell the roses along my way', even in grocery stores that have flowers for sale. As you know, pleasant aromas create a sense of bliss making us feel better, less stressful. The heavenly aroma of roses enduces such bliss and stress relief, quite well.

Also, you may know that the quality of essential oils vary due to the way they are extracted. Below, are helpful details to know in order to select the more 'organically-produced' rose oil of the choices available.

"Rose oil, meaning either rose otto (attar of rose, attar of roses) or rose absolute, is the essential oil extracted from the petals of various types of rose. Rose ottos are extracted through steam distillation, while rose absolutes are obtained through solvent extraction or supercritical carbon dioxide extraction, with the absolute being used more commonly in perfumery. Even with their high price and the advent of organic synthesis, rose oils are still perhaps the most widely used essential oil in perfumery.

Two major species of rose are cultivated for the production of rose oil:

  • Rosa damascena, the damask rose, which is widely grown in Bulgaria, Turkey, Russia, India, Uzbekistan, Iran and China

  • Rosa centifolia, the cabbage rose, which is more commonly grown in Morocco, France and Egypt

Most rose oil is produced in Bulgaria, Morocco, Iran and Turkey. Recently, China has begun producing rose oil as well.

More than 300 compounds have been identified in rose oil. The most common are: citronellol, geraniol, nerol, linalool, phenyl ethyl alcohol, farnesol, stearoptene, α-pinene, β-pinene, α-terpinene, limonene, p-cymene, camphene, β-caryophyllene, neral, citronellyl acetate, geranyl acetate, neryl

Andiroba Oil

Andiroba aka Carapa Guianensis
Hello, Everyone! Andiroba oil is an oil that I've recently discovered and I'm looking forward to adding it to my cadre of oils because of its many benefits.
Andiroba oil is obtained from the seeds of the andiroba tree. The andiroba tree is part of the mahogany family found in tropical Brazil, Guyana & Colombia. Each andiroba tree produces small semi-circular seeds that have similar characteristics to neem oil without the un-friendly scent of neem oil. The name andiroba is taken from the name "nheengatu nhandi rob", which means "bitter oil".

Andiroba oil is extensively used by:

  • Professional athletes as a muscle rub and to treat sports injuries
  • People that suffer from arthritis and rheumatism as a pain reliever
  • Hair care salons as a hot oil treatment for clients with thick, naturally curly hair. Andiroba oil increases blood circulation in the scalp, which in turn promotes healthy hair growth.

Sources of andirob oil and indepth information about this fabulous oil are below:

Organic Body Butter

Good evening, Everyone! While reviewing information about essential oils and butters, online I read about Dr. Mercola's Organic Body Butter. It "reads" like a really good product. It contains many of my favorite ingredients for hair care. So, I'm looking forward to trying it for my body, soon! Some of its details are below:

Organic Body Butter - from Mercola.com
"You really can have it both ways, with Organic Body Butter's 8 extraordinary ingredients:

  • Xanthan gum"

Coconut Oil

Good day, All! Coconut oil is one of my favorite oils for several reasons. I love the internal, nutrional benefits, I love its aroma, and I love the immediate benefits and long-term benefits it has on my hair.

A few details about this wonderful oil:

Coconut oil is one of the best, natural, nutritional oils for hair. It helps generate healthy-hair growth and makes the hair glossy. Regular massage of the head with coconut oil ensures that your scalp is free of dandruff, lice, and lice eggs. Coconut oil has been used extensively for decades in India for hair care. Also, using coconut oil scented with Tiarè flower, is a great Polynesian tradition.

Coconut oil's protective, softening and nourishing properties are truly amazing for hair care. It is an excellent conditioner and helps in the restoration of hair that's been damaged . It, also, provides the essential proteins required for nourishing damaged hair. Therefore, it is used as a hair care oil and used in manufacturing various conditioners, and dandruff relief creams. As hair care, coconut oil is normally applied directly to scalp and hair.

My source for fragrant, virgin coconut oil is Coconut Oil Online - Coconut Oil Supreme™. The Coconut Oil Online website is complete with thorough information about virgin coconut oil. Some of their links are:

When not ordering online, I've purchased Garden of Life's Extra Virgin Coconut Oil at a local health food store, even though its title includes the term "extra". Why? I'm familiar with Jordan Rubin's (CEO & Founder of Garden of Life) personal health story, and the details on his Living Foods Extra Virgin Coconut Oil web page, compared to others', was the next best choice to Coconut Oil Supreme™, my #1 choice. Sometimes, I have to go with choice #2, so I've picked the best one I could find.

I believe the links, above, will provide valuable information about coconut oil to you!

Extra Virgin Olive Oil

Good day, Everyone. I love to use extra virgin olive oil on my food, on my skin and hair, too! When I first tried to use olive oil on my hair and body, I did not like its aroma. That was some time ago, and perhaps the oil was old, expired, rancid or simply not "extra virgin". Now, I still notice an aroma and it is always pleasant. Some of my favorite extra virgin olive oils are Colavita Extra Virgin Olive Oil and Newman's Own Organics Extra Virgin Olive Oil.

Cocoa Butter

Hello, Everyone! Cocoa butter is another favorite "butter" for me! I love the way it smells, and it's silky feel on my fingertips and skin, including my lips. I have no problem, whatsoever, with smelling like CHOCOLATE! I began using cocoa butter on my hair when I had nothing else on hand to use as a conditioner other than a stick of cocoa butter. From that moment forward I've enjoyed using cocoa butter on my hair, because it glosses and silkens my hair.

I thought you all might enjoy reading a bit more about cocoa butter. So, you can view RawGuru's Truly Raw Organic Cocoa Butter and Mountain Rose Herbs' Organic Cocoa Butter for wonderful information about cocoa butter.

Shea Butter

Shea Butter

Good day, Everyone. I've been using shea butter for several years, now, as an ingredient of a hair creme I created for my own hair. I love the way shea butter feels on my hands as I apply it to my hair. And I love the conditioning impact shea butter has on my hair. You may want to add shea butter to your hair care routine, too, if you haven't done so already. So, here's more information about shea butter, below.

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia:

"Shea butter or Shea nut butter is a slightly yellowish or ivory-colored natural fat extracted from fruit of the shea tree by crushing and boiling. Shea butter is widely used in cosmetics as a moisturizer and an emollient. Shea butter is also edible. It is used as a cooking oil in West Africa, as well as sometimes being used in the chocolate industry as a substitute for cocoa butter.

The shea or karite tree, formerly Butyrospermum paradoxum, is now called Vitellaria paradoxa. It produces its first fruit (which resemble large plums) when it is about 20 years old and reaches its full production when the tree is about 45 years old. It produces nuts for up to 200 years after reaching maturity."

Conditioning Curly Hair - I

How to Condition Curly Hair from wikiHow - The How to Manual That You Can Edit

Taking care of your curly hair can be a challenge if you don't know what products and tools work best for your hair type. A good conditioner and homemade remedies can be essential for curly hair.

Steps

  1. Find a good conditioner that adds moisture to hair. You can find them at drugstores, health food stores (organic conditioners are often very good), or specialty stores (such as Ulta or Sally's Beauty Supply).

  2. Distribute conditioner throughout all of your hair and untangle gently. Use your hands or a wide-toothed comb. Start by untangling bottom sections of your hair and then gradually move upwards. Let the conditioner sit in your hair for five minutes or so for extra moisture.

  3. Do the final rinse of your hair with cool or cold water. This will decrease frizz and add shine. Leave some conditioner in your hair, especially in dry sections like the ends and if you are not adding styling product. You can also opt to use a thick conditioner as a leave-in.

  4. Add a leave-in cream or conditioner to wet hair. Distribute gel as well and scrunch the hair.
  5. Protect your hair from the sun. You can wear a large floppy hat or a scarf on top of your hair. Otherwise look for a conditioner that has a sunscreen in it and leave some in your hair if you're going to be outside in the sun. You can also leave normal conditioner mixed with sunscreen in your hair.

  6. Realize that curly hair has different needs during different seasons. In the summer use more liquid-like products so as to not suffocate the hair. It's also helpful to leave less conditioner and leave in cream in your hair to prevent frizzing and increase definition. It's sort of the opposite in winter. You should use heavier, creamier products and more conditioner or leave-in to combat dry, wintry air.
Tips

  • It is especially necessary to do this during the colder months, when hair can become dry and brittle. It's also important during warm months when swimming and chlorine can wreak havoc on curls.

  • Trim the hair every two to four months to get rid of split and dry ends. Ask your hair stylist not to use a razor as it will leave your ends ratty.

  • Sulfates- ammonium laureth sulfate, ammonium lauryl sulfate, sodium laureth sulfate, sodium lauryl sulfate, etc.- are found in most shampoos and can be drying and damaging to curly hair. Consider not shampooing and washing with only conditioner. However you will have to avoid silicones. Also consider purchasing non-sulfate shampoos and using them sparingly.
Warnings
  • If you are using essential oils, always remember to dilute them first before using them on any part of your body - whether hair or skin.
Things You'll Need
  • Conditioner

  • Wide-toothed comb

How to Wash Your Hair Without Shampoo: 11 steps - wikiHow

"As Lorraine Massey, author of Curly Girl, told the New York Times, "The curly-haired can leave their hair hydrated with natural oils and clean their scalps quite well by rinsing only with conditioner .... Rubbing the scalp firmly with fingers is enough to loosen dirt."

There are many reasons to eschew typical shampoo if you have naturally curly hair. Most shampoos contain harsh, drying sulfates that are extremely damaging for curly hair (ammonium laureth sulfate, ammonium lauryl sulfate, sodium laureth sulfate, sodium lauryl sulfate, etc.). They are often foaming agents that make curly hair frizzy and uncooperative. Using conditioner in place of shampoo will cleanse the hair just as effectively without stripping it of moisture." wikiHow.com

STEPS:

1. Prepare before you begin a no-shampoo routine. Clarify with a sulfate shampoo to remove any silicones and get your hair trimmed if you have any split ends. It takes 2-4 weeks for your hair to adjust to the no shampoo. It may even look worse at first. Hair is a long-term project and it may take a couple weeks for it to regain its health.

2. Begin your routine by wetting your hair in the shower.

3. Distribute conditioner on your entire scalp and massage your scalp with the tips of your fingers. This will cleanse the scalp of any dirt and get rid of dandruff. Then rinse thoroughly. You only need to do this step every other day.

4. Distribute a moisturizing conditioner throughout all of your hair.

5. Untangle using your fingers or a wide-toothed comb. Take a small section of hair on one side of your head and untangle from the bottom up. Repeat until all of your hair is combed."

How to Wash Curly Hair - wikiHow.com

"Curly hair is typically dryer than straight hair. Pay careful attention to how you wash your curls and reap the benefits of healthy hair.

STEPS:

1. Know that you can wash your curly hair every day, but ideally you shouldn't wash it with a sulfate shampoo. Occasional non-sulfate shampooing and conditioner washing on a day-to-day basis is best. Visit this article for more information. If you still want to wash with shampoo try to limit it to no more than twice a week. On the other days just conditioner will suffice.

2. Find a good conditioner that adds moisture to hair. You can find them at drugstores, health food stores (organic conditioners are often very good), or specialty stores (such as Ulta or Sally's Beauty Supply). Try to find a conditioner without any silicones. Find out if your conditioner has any 'cones' by scanning the ingredients for items ending in -cone, -conol, -xane, and -one. Ingredients with PEG in front of them are okay however. Exceptions to the rule are benezophenone, a beneficial sunscreen and methylchloroisothiazolinone and methylisothiazolinone, preservatives.

3. Find a cheap conditioner that is also silicone free such as V05 or Suave naturals.

4. Rinse your hair with lukewarm water.

5. Apply as much of the cheap conditioner as needed to your scalp and massage with the tips of your fingers to remove dandruff and dirt that has accumulated. Rinse." wikiHow.com

Six Things that Significantly Impact the Condition of Hair

Hello! I do hope you've been doing well since my last post. Today, I'm sharing about things that impact the condition of hair, significantly. Some of the following points may be quite familiar to you, while others may not. The six things, or categories are:

  1. Food we digest
  2. Beverages we digest
  3. Products we apply to the scalp and hair
  4. Hair-care appliances and tools we use to style our hair
  5. Thoughts we think about our hair
  6. Statements we make about our hair

Today, my focus is on the thoughts we think and the statements we speak about our hair. In my observations over time, I've experienced calmer, easier-to-care-for hair when I thought/think positive thoughts about it. In other words, I've noticed that my hair "followed" the directions of my thoughts about it! If I thought poorly of my hair, my hair behaved in a way that agreed with my negative thoughts. Examples of negative thoughts about the hair are, "My hair is always so tangled!" or "My hair is so difficult to manage." Negative thoughts like that, ultimately, become self-fulfilling prophecies, if we don't change what we think to a positive thought of how we desire our hair to behave. Take note of the thoughts you think about your hair and if it's been negative, start changing what you think. Find something nice to think about your hair everday, stick with it and you will see pleasant improvements.

Similarly, what we say about our hair, whether joking or not, becomes a self-fulfilling prophecy as well. You've probably heard the phrase, "I'm having a bad-hair day." or "My hair is so crazy!" Just like negative thoughts, such statements ultimately become self-fulfilling prophecies, if we don't change what we say to reflect how we desire our hair to behave. As with your thoughts, take note of what you say about your hair, ane if it's been negative, start changing what you say, stick with it and you'll see a lovely improvement!

Start appreciating your hair with your own thoughts and words, now, even if your hair is less than what you desire it to be right now. It will improve, because your body is listening to what you think and say. "Sweet-talk" and "sweet-thoughts" your hair and reap the rewards!
